Volunteers Honored at the Senior Center

April is National Volunteer Month

The annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon was held at the Senior Center last Friday and it was truly a magical time. Director Jan Conole and the staff of the center expressed their gratitude to the many dedicated volunteers who were in attendance.

“You should know that we would not be able to offer the robust programming and resources without your dedication to helping others,” said Jan.

She also thanked her staff, who work daily to enhance the lives of all adults who utilize the Senior Center every day.

In the past year, over 9,200 volunteer hours were recorded. This significantly increased the many workshops and activities available to the senior community in Tewksbury. The Boutique and the Gift Shoppe could not be there if not for the volunteers. The Zingo, LCR and Cribbage games would not happen without volunteers. The Friends of the Elderly work to bring the community and seniors together, offering family breakfasts and suppers. Volunteers work the reception desk, answer questions and forward phone calls.

This year, guests were treated to the wonderful and exciting Lyn Dillies, Master Illusionist. Lyn is from Westport, Mass., and is the most awarded female illusionist in the world. At the age of 12, Lyn knew her “destiny was to become not only a first-rate illusionist, but undeniably one of the finest, most-respected illusionists in the world.” Career highlights include producing her Learn Magic with Lyn DVD, which empowers children to perform their own magic. She created her own public service campaign, called Your Vote is Magic, that uses her magic to teach young people about the importance of voting.

Attendees greatly enjoyed the program. If you’d like to volunteer at the Senior Center, there is a signup sheet at the reception desk. Leave your name and phone or email and Ginny Desmond will contact you. Or, find contact info in the newsletter.

This program was supported in part by a grant from the Tewksbury Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Grant funding for the luncheon was also received from the Executive Office of Elder Affairs who recognize the importance of volunteerism.
