Library Virtual Lecture: A Visit To Haddon Hall — England’s 900-Year-Old Medieval Manor Home
The Tewksbury Public Library (300 Chandler Street) is holding an art history and armchair travel webinar — “A Visit To Haddon Hall — England’s 900-Year-Old Medieval Manor Home” — at 2pm on ZOOM. Set in the rolling hills and valleys of Derbyshire, England, the medieval manor house of Haddon Hall has been home to the Vernon and Manners families for 900 years. Its history is complex; the house lay virtually untouched for 200 years while the family lived elsewhere. That resulted in its picture perfect, ‘frozen in time’ appearance which architectural historians celebrate and earned it a place as a stunning backdrop to numerous films. Take a look at this picturesque place, from the surviving Medieval kitchens to the chapel, which features rare 15th century frescoes. There is a tapestry gift from King Henry VIII on view in the great hall and an impressive Elizabethan long gallery, often described as the most beautiful room in England. Along the way, imagine just what it would be like to live in such a historically important and magnificent home. Led by art historian Mary Woodward, a guide at several Historic New England properties. She previously served as Public Programs Coordinator and Educator at the Concord Museum.
