Murphy to Step off Board, Plus More Takeaways from the Council on Aging

There are new events for all ages, including Bingo with the Tewksbury Police Department!

With a quorum of nine members present, two absent, Chairperson Marilyn Murphy called the March 19, 2024 meeting to order at 3:03 p.m.

The meeting minutes of February 20, 2024, were unanimously approved, as were the financial reports for February 2024.

The April 2024 calendar of upcoming events was presented. In addition to ongoing classes and support groups, look for events in which the entire community can partake. For example, the week of April 15 is school vacation, and as grandparents, you may be called on to assist with watching the youngsters. On Thursday April 18 at 10 a.m., bring the kids down and play Bingo with Tewksbury Police officers. Bingo cards and daubers will be supplied. Maybe some prizes too!

On Friday, April 19 at 7 p.m., The Silvertones will be on hand for the monthly dance. On Saturday the 20th be sure to make time for the Spaghetti Supper, sponsored by the Friends of the Elderly. Tickets are $10 per person and available at the Friends desk Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The police will be back on Thursday, April 25, for a Safety Course. They will be teaching basic skills to help older adults recognize and avoid dangerous situations.

Director Jan Conole reports the atrium will have a new addition installed very soon. The bulletin board outside Hall B is coming down, and it will be replaced by an electronic message board. This board will take the place of paper flyers and messages. Like the flyers, the board will be advertising all the new and ongoing events happening at the center on a streaming basis. Be on the lookout for a new electronic outdoor sign coming this spring as well.

As a final note to the meeting, Marilyn — she prefers Lynn — Murphy has announced that she is stepping off the Council on Aging Board. Lynn was first appointed to the board in 2016 and for the last six years she has been the Chair. Lynn has served the Council, and Tewksbury’s seniors, in so many ways. She could be seen volunteering her services around the building, in health clinics, helping to serve lunches, or chairing the COA. Her presence on the COA Board will certainly be missed by all. Thank you, Lynn Murphy.
