What To Know This First Week of June In Tewksbury

The Community Market returns this week for its 11th season

The Tewksbury Pride Picnic drew a crowd to the Common yesterday. Middlesex DA Marian Ryan, above, reminded attendees that Massachusetts was the first state to legalize same-sex marriage and said her office created an anti-hate, anti-bias task force and aggressively enforces civil rights laws.

“Members of our LBGTQ+ community are and always have been deserving of dignity, of respect and a full share in our life in this Commonwealth,” said Ryan. “Twenty-one years ago, when the Supreme Judicial Court recognized the right to same-sex marriage, Chief Justice Marshall wrote a line in that opinion that has always stayed with me, because it is at the root of what we do. She said the Massachusetts Constitution recognizes the dignity and equality of every person. It forbids the creation of any second-class citizens. And that’s something that we strive every day to make sure is true, that people feel valued and accepted. And that they never have to question, ‘Do I belong here?'”

Representatives Tram Nguyen and Vanna Howard and Senator Barry Finegold also attended.
