Takeaways from the Council on Aging Meeting

Final Winter Market will be held this Thursday

Seeing a quorum of nine members present, Chairperson Marilyn Murphy called the February 20, 2024 Tewksbury Council on Aging meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.

Recording Secretary Tracy Skahan presented the December 19, 2023 meeting minutes, and they were unanimously approved (no meeting in January). Treasurer Donna Bell then presented the Financial Reports, which were also unanimously approved.

The March 2024 calendar of events was then discussed. Some of next month’s highlights are the Intake at the Consignment Boutique, Rainbow Social, Silvertones Dance, the Men’s Group meetups, movies and much more. The full calendar is printed in the SENIOR MOMENTS, which is available at the center or online Council on Aging | Tewksbury, MA (tewksbury-ma.gov).

Director Janice Conole then gave her report of happenings around the center. This is just a few of the many things she and her team are involved in: Grant money was used to renovate the ever popular Consignment Boutique, and to add a new floor in the gift shop. There has been positive feedback on the Technology Classes. These classes are held in a hybrid model, so 15 people can attend in person, with five joining virtually. Jan is “working on several other offerings for hybrid programming” and will keep the Council updated on when they will start.

The first session of the Brains and Balance class series is almost completed, and a second session will be starting on March 20. The last Winter Market is this Thursday, Feb. 29, from 4 – 7 p.m. There will two food trucks and 30 vendors.

“We have been happy to collaborate with Alex Lowder and Robert Hayes to provide this opportunity for the community to enjoy a Winter Market at the Senior Center” said Jan.

See you next year?

The Outreach & EMHOT Coordinator, Christina Hess, has procured several more elevated garden beds for the vegetable and flowers this summer. Should be a great harvest come the fall.

The next meeting of the COA is March 19, 2024 at 3 p.m.

Finally, if you have some spare time, the Senior Center and many other town groups are always looking for volunteers. You can find a directory of these organizations in our Carnation Connector.

“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.”
