This month, join us for a discussion of Britt-Marie Was Here by Fredrik Backman. Enjoy a screening of one of Hollywood’s newest DVD releases — Roofman. A charismatic criminal, while on the run from the police, hides in a hidden space of a toy store. There, he adopts a new identity and becomes involved with an employee, beginning a relationship as unlikely as it is risky. Starring Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst. Comedy/Romance/Drama. Rated R. 2 Hours, 6 Minutes. Doors will open at 1:30pm. Film will start at 2pm. Candy & water will be served. A $1 donation is suggested to help cover the costs of refreshments.

IN PERSON: Puzzle Swap

Saturday, January 31, 9:30am-11:30pm

Bring your jigsaw puzzles to swap. Puzzle pieces should be sealed tightly in a ziplock bag inside the box. Please tape the puzzle box close. Puzzle pieces should be totally disassembled — no chunks! Participants may swap one-for-one (e.g., bring 2 puzzles, take 2 puzzles). Participants may swap up to 12 puzzles. Participants may also “purchase” puzzles, with a recommended donation of $2 (for a 500-piece puzzle) and $5 (for a 1,000-piece puzzle). These donations will benefit the Friends of the Tewksbury Library. Puzzle fantastic Sue Pedersen will oversee the swap, which will take place from 9:30am to 11:30am, in the library’s lobby. Don’t forget about the Puzzle Race happening in the Meeting Room at 10:30am.

Saturday, January 31, 10:30am

Assemble your team for a chance at puzzle victory! The first team to complete a special 500-piece puzzle will take home all the glory. Prizes will be given to the first, second and third place teams. To keep the competition relatively even, please note this race is intended for “amateur” puzzle racers. (People who don’t regularly compete in speed racing.) Feel free to bring your own puzzles for a puzzle swap, which takes place from 9:30am to 11:30am, in the library’s lobby, organized by puzzle fanatic Sue Pedersen. You can swap before and/or after you finish the race.

VIRTUAL: An Introduction To Homesteading (*RR)

Author Victoria Pruett will discuss her new book, Creating a Modern Homestead: Traditional Skills for Real, Everyday Life. Pruett will provide a general overview of various aspects of homesteading, including: cooking from scratch, food preservation, backyard chickens, backyard gardening, and natural pest control. Viewers will receive a broad overview of simple life changes they can make to get closer to nature and less dependent on large, commercial organizations. Pruett is a homesteader, from-scratch cook, and blogger. Her recipes, along with her gardening, canning, and frugal-living advice, have empowered millions of readers to grow food and cook from the ground up. Her work has been featured in Homestead Living magazine, Mother Earth News, The School of Traditional Skills, and many online resources.

Its cobblestone streets conjure tales of emperors and gladiators, while the Colosseum, Forum, and Pantheon stand as symbols of its grandeur. Vatican City’s spiritual aura, coupled with its vast collections of art, ensures Rome’s place as a captivating blend of history and culture. Led by “The Traveling Librarian” Jeff Klapes, the retired Head of Reference Services at the Lucius Beebe Memorial Library in Wakefield, and an avid traveler and photographer.

VIRTUAL: Agents of Change — The Women Who Transformed The CIA (*RR)

Author Christina Hillsberg will discuss her new bestselling book, Agents of Change: The Women Who Transformed the CIA. Explore the pioneering women who changed the insulated world of international espionage — from the barrier-crashing challenges of the 1960s to the present-day reckoning — told through the eyes of a former intelligence operative herself. The recipient of multiple CIA Exceptional Performance Awards, Hillsberg work at the CIA included specializing in African politics and leaders as one of the intelligence community’s few Swahili and Zulu linguists, producing analytic assessments for senior-level policymakers including the president and his cabinet, and serving in the CIA’s Directorate of Operations, clandestinely collecting intelligence from the field. A recognized expert on women in espionage and intelligence tradecraft, she is also the author of License to Parent: How My Career as a Spy Helped Me Raise Resourceful, Self-Sufficient Kids.

VIRTUAL: A Morning With The Tudors — A Look At The Dudleys & The Howards (*RR)

Author Nicola Clark will discuss her new book, The Waiting Game: The Untold Story of the Women Who Served the Tudor Queens, a colorful and authoritative narrative history of the often-overlooked—yet hugely influential—figures of the Tudor court: the ladies-in-waiting. Clark has a PhD in Early Modern History from Royal Holloway and is a Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of Chichester. Her research focuses primarily on women’s dynastic and political roles across the late medieval and early modern period. Clark will be joined by author Dr. Joanne Paul, who will discuss her book, The House of Dudley: A New History of Tudor England, the shocking and extraordinary story of the most conniving, manipulative Tudor family you’ve never heard of—the dashing and daring House of Dudley. Dr. Paul is an acclaimed historian who has published her research on the Renaissance and Early Modern periods widely, focusing on the political, intellectual and cultural history of the Renaissance and Early Modern periods, with an attention to Tudor and Stuart England.

VIRTUAL: American Art At 250 — Masterworks Of A Nation (*RR)

Celebrate America’s extraordinary artistic legacy as we commemorate our nation’s 250th anniversary with a curated exploration of the masterworks that have defined our cultural identity. From the luminous landscapes of the Hudson River School to the bold innovations of Abstract Expressionism, explore the diverse voices and revolutionary spirits that have shaped American art across two and a half centuries. Through intimate encounters with iconic works by artists like Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, discover how American artists have continuously redefined not only our visual culture, but art itself on the world stage. IN PERSON: Winter Bird Drawing (*RR)

Tuesday, January 27, 3:30pm

Take a walk on the creative side with this art-themed event, Winter Bird Drawing! We will be using black and white charcoal pencils on brown craft paper to give the illusion of fluffy white birds sitting among the branches on a snowy winter’s day. This event is for teens in grades 6-12.

IN PERSON: No Bake Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie (*RR)

Wednesday, January 28, 4:30pm

Learn how to make a delicious chocolate chip cookie pie, no oven required! You’ll leave with a full pie to take home with you and enjoy. Please note that the pie needs to be chilled for a minimum of eight hours after we make it, so you will be unable to eat it until the next day. Due to the nature of the recipe, we are unable to accommodate allergies during this event. If you are concerned that an allergen may be in the recipe, please email Emily at eleggat@tewksburypl.org for the ingredient list.

IN PERSON: Toddler Story Time

Monday, January 26, 10:15am

Join us for stories, songs, movement, instruments, dancing and more. Get your early literacy skills on! All of our story times are interactive for children and their caregivers. Please be ready to participate and play. Don’t worry, we will have a printout of our songs and rhymes so you can follow along!

IN PERSON: Baby Lapsit Story Time

Wednesday, January 28, 10:15am

A gentle, interactive story time designed especially for our youngest patrons! Babies and their caregivers will enjoy simple stories, rhymes, songs, and bounces that support early language development and bonding. This program is perfect for infants who sit in a caregiver’s lap and are just beginning to explore the world through sound and movement. Join us for sweet moments, early literacy fun, and lots of snuggles. Baby Lapsit is designed for young children ages 0 to 2 years old and their caregivers. All of our story times are interactive for children and their caregivers. Please be ready to participate and play. Don’t worry, we will have a printout with all of the songs and rhymes we are using so you can follow along! Story Times run in sessions. You can drop in one week, every week or however works best for your schedule. No registration is required. This session is Wednesdays from January 7 – May 27 (excluding closings and other exceptions).

IN PERSON: Preschool Playgroup

Preschool playgroup is a weekly group where kids can meet, play, and learn. Pick up STEM and literacy skills, and have some fun while you’re at it! Sponsored by Community Teamwork Inc’s Family Resource Network. The Family Resource Network is funded by the Coordinated Family and Community Engagement Grant (CFCE) from the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care.

IN PERSON: Pokémon Club

Exciting news! The American Library Association has teamed up with Pokémon to bring Pokémon Clubs to libraries nationwide, and our library is one of them! Join us for our revamped and expanded Pokémon Club. Want to learn how to play? Already a seasoned battler? Just a Pokémon fan in general? No matter your level or interest, there is a place for you here! This event is for children in grades K-5.
