Letter to the Editor: Proposed Lithium-Ion Battery Storage Facility

A Chelmsford resident voices support for the proposed Lithium-Ion Battery Storage Facility.

As a Chelmsford resident and neighbor to Tewksbury, I want to voice my strong support for the proposed Hillman Energy Center. This 125MW battery energy storage project is exactly the kind of clean energy infrastructure we need in Massachusetts right now.

By storing energy when it’s abundant and releasing it during peak demand, Hillman will help lower energy costs, improve grid reliability, and reduce dependence on polluting fossil fuels. It’s a cleaner, safer alternative to gas peaker plants, like the one on Tanner Street in Lowell, which contributes to harmful air pollution.

The project is also a responsible redevelopment of a previously contaminated industrial site. Instead of letting that space sit idle, East Point Energy is committing to clean it up, invest in native landscaping, and improve the on-site pond. Even better, they’ll contribute over $1 million annually to the local tax base and create union jobs during construction which are desperately needed for our region’s economy.

Battery energy storage is a critical part of a sustainable energy future. It enhances public health, supports the transition to renewables, and increases resilience in the face of extreme weather. As someone who lives just a few miles away, I’m proud to support this project and hope the Energy Facilities Siting Board approves it.

Sincerely,
Melinda Phillips

She approves of that lithium battery crap, let them build it in Chelmsford, massachusetts…tewksbury has had enough pollution from the junk yards…

Interesting how the Energy supporter lives miles away where the lithium farm would have no negative impact on her life…. feel free to contact your admired Governor Healy and tell her how much you’d love a project like this in your back yard…..

Please put it your town then. The proposed site in Tewksbury is way too close to several factors making it a threat to our community.

If you want it so bad, by all means build in your back yard! Not in mine!
