The Lions Club is the largest volunteer organization in the world, dedicated to eradicating blindness and supporting vision-related causes worldwide.
Dear Editor:
The Lions Club was founded in 1917 by a group of businessmen from Chicago. In 1925 the Lions were challenged by Helen Keller to become Knights of the Blind. The Lions Club took up this challenge and to this day, the Lions continue to honor this challenge by collecting and distributing tens of thousands of pairs of used eyeglasses to all corners of the globe to those who normally would have no access to eyeglasses. The Lions Goal/Mission is to eradicate world blindness.
The Lions Club is the largest volunteer organization in the world operating in over 200 countries. The Tewksbury Lions club was formed in 1954. As a 100% volunteer organization, no members receive any pay for their efforts. We are a 501 C3 registered non-profit organization, meaning that all donations to the Lions Club are 100% tax deductible. We typically run 5 or 6 fundraisers a year and donate to a variety of local and national organizations as well as relief efforts (such as to North Carolina due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in 2024).
In total, the Tewksbury Lions Club made over $18,000.00 in donations to various organizations and/or relief efforts in the 2024 -2025 Fiscal Year. Beneficiaries included the Tewksbury Food Pantry, Tewksbury Senior Scholarships, Cancer Research, Toys for Tots, Tewksbury Public Library, Perkins & Carroll Centers for the Blind, Lions Club Eye Research, Lions Club International Disaster Fund and holiday meals to senior citizens. Additionally, the Tewksbury Lions Club alone collected over 1,000 pairs of used eyeglasses to be sent to various countries in need.
The more Lions members we have, the more funds we can raise, thereby increasing the positive impact we have on those in need within our local, national and international communities. We want to make people aware of what we are doing in the hopes that they will see if they would like to join us.
We meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month (except July and August) and we welcome anyone who would like to help and make a difference. We would love for you to join us at T.J. Callahan’s at 7:00 p.m.
Hope to see you in September!
Sincerely yours,
John Deputat
President
