The Council on Aging highlights upcoming events as summer approaches!
Chairperson Donna Bell called the meeting to order at 3:01pm. Members in attendance were Sandy Creamer, Tracy Skahan, Robert Herrick, Kathleen Walsh, Joanne Aldrich, Mary-Ann Nichols, Jeff Defour, Michael McDermott and Virginia Desmond. Joan Unger was absent.
The meeting minutes of April 15th and the YTD financials were discussed and unanimously approved on a voice vote.
Director Jan Conole was absent, and Secretary Tammy Duggan presented the June Calendar of Events. Please check the June addition of the Senior Moments newsletter for the dates and times for the many events happening in June. A few highlights are the Consignment Boutique Intake, performance by the Swinging Seniors, Silvertone’s Dance, Memory Cafe, DJ Dance/Lunch, and two movie days. Additionally, on Friday, June 27th, there will be a very special evening of Drag Queen Trivia.
Secretary Duggan then continued with the Director’s Report:
Funding was approved at Town Meeting for a new heating system at the Senior Center to prevent future heating issues.
It was announced that Susan Timmons is working on a resource fair with a focus on “Aging at Home”. This fair will offer suggestions to help older residents find the help they need to continue to live independently.
Bingo with the Police was once again highlighted as a great success, with strong attendance. The department is now looking ahead to a possible ice cream social in August.
Duggan revealed the council is excited to partner with a Massachusetts Bar Association attorney for an “Elder Law Presentation” on June 12th. This session will explore legal topics important to older adults and their families.
~Ladies, are you looking to play billiards?~ The billiards room at the center will be reserved on Mondays in June from 2pm – 4 pm for any women interested in learning or playing the game. The council will be collaborating with the Billerica COA in the event that instructional support is needed.
As the final item of business, Donna Bell was unanimously re-elected as Chairperson of the Council on Aging for the upcoming fiscal year, starting in July. Congratulations, Donna!
