Alternative House’s Fresh Start Free Store provides access to essential clothing, personal items, and food for survivors of domestic violence.
Lowell, MA – Alternative House is proud to announce the opening of its Fresh Start Free Store, a welcoming and supportive space designed specifically for survivors of domestic violence. The store provides access to essential clothing, personal care items, and food at no cost and is dedicated to empowering individuals as they work toward stability and independence.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony, held November 10th, marked a significant step forward in Alternative House’s mission to help survivors rebuild their lives with dignity and respect.
“The Fresh Start Free Store is about more than meeting basic needs,” said Maria Crooker-Capone, Executive Director of Alternative House. “It’s about restoring a sense of control, choice, and community for those who have endured so much. Every detail, from the layout to the way we greet each shopper, was designed with care and compassion.”
Referral-Based Access
The Fresh Start Free Store operates on a referral-only basis to ensure that every shopper receives personalized support and is connected to ongoing services. Individuals must be referred by a case worker from a partner agency or program. This process ensures that participants receive holistic assistance tailored to their individual needs and goals.
A Dignified Shopping Experience
To create a safe and empowering environment, the store is open Tuesday – Friday during designated hours. Shopping is by appointment only, allowing each individual to receive the attention and assistance they deserve. Upon arrival, each shopper is paired with a trained volunteer who guides them through the store, helping them select the items they need most.
What’s Available
The Fresh Start Free Store offers a wide range of essential items, including:
- Clothing for all ages and seasons
- Personal care and hygiene products
- Non-perishable food items
While specific sizes or items cannot always be guaranteed, the store strives to provide suitable alternatives whenever possible.
Creating a Safe and Respectful Space
Fresh Start Free Store is more than a resource; it is a symbol of community care and resilience. All volunteers are trained in trauma-informed and survivor-centered approaches to ensure that every individual feels supported and respected throughout their visit.
Now Accepting Referrals
