Letter to the Editor: Proposed Lithium-Ion Battery Storage Facility

The state, not the Town of Tewksbury, will decide on the battery storage project. Public hearing: Oct. 9, 6:30 PM, Tewksbury Memorial High School.

Dear Neighbors,

Many residents are not aware that the proposed lithium-ion battery storage facility at 73–75 Hillman Street will not be decided by a town vote. The decision rests at the state level with the Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board, not with the Town of Tewksbury.

This project is a dangerous fit for our community. The site is located near homes, schools, Emerald Court, Bayberry assisted living, and emergency services just over half a mile away. In the event of a lithium-ion fire, toxic smoke could spread quickly, and it would be nearly impossible to safely evacuate vulnerable residents, children, and the elderly. Wildlife and property values would also be at risk. To make matters worse, the company behind this project is an LLC, if disaster strikes, they could walk away and leave the town and taxpayers with millions in costs.

What you can do to help:

  • Attend the public hearing on Thursday, October 9 at 6:30 PM at Tewksbury Memorial High School.
  • Send your comments by email or mail to the Energy Facilities Siting Board. Reference: Docket EFSB 25-08, 73–75 Hillman Road, Tewksbury.
  • Take the community survey: https://forms.gle/31M9dzAoBZZx2Arn6
  • Join the Facebook group: Tewksbury MA Say NO to Lithium Battery Site for updates.
  • Share this information with family and friends. Every letter matters.

Together, we can protect our homes, health, and safety and send a strong message that this facility does not belong in Tewksbury.

Thank you,

Christine Chesbrough
