Letter to Secretary Tibbits-Nutt Requests Immediate Action Amid Ongoing Crashes on Route 125

State Senator Barry R. Finegold, State Representative Tram T. Nguyen, State Representative Frank A. Moran, and State Representative Adrianne P. Ramos call on Secretary Tibbits-Nutt to address dangerous crashes on Route 125.

Dear Secretary Tibbits-Nutt:

We are deeply concerned following another fatal crash on Route 125 in Andover on October 4, 2025. According to Massachusetts State Police, the multi-vehicle collision at the intersection of Route 125 and Vine Street tragically claimed one life and shut the roadway for several hours.

This is, unfortunately, not an isolated event. Over the years, Route 125 in Andover and the surrounding
corridor has seen multiple crashes involving fatal or serious injury:

  • In August 2012, two senior residents were killed when their vehicle attempted to cross from
Wildwood Road onto Route 125 and was struck by a pickup.
  • In January 2017, a driver in an SUV rear-ended a tractor-trailer parked at a red light at Gould
Street / Route 125; the SUV caught fire and the driver died.
  • In December 2020, a 64-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed on Route 125 in North
    Andover.

These incidents, among others in the corridor, reflect a troubling pattern of fatal and severe crashes along this stretch. Given the frequency and severity of accidents we respectfully and urgently request that MassDOT give attention to this matter. We request the most updated crash data, including fatal and nonfatal accidents and request a meeting to discuss and formulate a plan to improve safety including potentially adding a light at the intersection of Wildwood Road and Route 125.

The residents, businesses, and families in Andover, North Andover, and neighboring communities are weary of hearing about another life lost on Route 125. It is imperative that MassDOT treat this corridor as a high priority for safety improvements.

We are prepared to work with you, local leaders, and stakeholders to determine what is necessary and secure resources needed to make these changes. We look forward to collaborating regarding this critical safety issue.
