Planting the Future: Arbor Day Celebration at Center Elementary School

The Tewksbury Garden Club celebrated Arbor Day by engaging with the Tewksbury community through an outreach event with third-grade students at Center Elementary School.

On May 10th , members of the Tewksbury Garden Club met with third-grade class students at the Center School to celebrate Arbor Day. Although the actual date to observe Arbor Day falls on the last Friday of April, any day is appropriate to acknowledge the importance of trees in the environment. During the assembly, students participated in a discussion about the role trees play in creating a healthy ecosystem.

The third graders were also given the opportunity to design a poster that depicted how trees benefit the community. Continuing a years’ long tradition, saplings were given to each child in the third grade to take home to plant. This year a white spruce tree was given out. This tree is native to the United States and Canada.

Each third-grade classroom teacher also received a book of fiction or non-fiction that related to trees or nature. These books are later donated to the school’s library to be enjoyed by all students. The Arbor Day program for Tewksbury students was made possible by the generous support of a grant from the Tewksbury Cultural Council, a member of the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
