‘Love Should Be Sweet’ Fundraiser to Benefit Survivors of Domestic Violence

Annual event hosted by the ladies of Long Meadow features Tanglewood Festival Chorus singer

A “Love Should Be Sweet” fundraiser to benefit Alternative House will be held at Long Meadow Golf Club on Sunday, Feb. 19, from noon to 3 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Ladies of Long Meadow, who generously provide refreshments and the room overlooking the golf course. This year attendees may enter to win a basket in honor and memory of Helena Raras, a longtime friend of Long Meadow and Alternative House.

The event will feature a performance by soprano Alison Burns, a member of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Attendees will also enjoy complimentary glasses of champagne, light hors d’oeuvres, chocolate treats, a cash bar and an extensive raffle table.

Long Meadow Golf Club is located at 165 Havilah St., Lowell. To attend, make a $40 tax-deductible donation at or by sending a check payable to Alternative House, PO Box 2100, Lowell, MA, 01851.

Since 1978, Alternative House has provided emergency shelter, support, youth programming, legal assistance, transitional and permanent housing and community advocacy to people affected by domestic violence. AH is committed to providing access to case management, safety planning and support for goal setting, financial empowerment and job/educational placement.

In 2022, Alternative House served 1,260 clients, providing almost 10,000 sessions of service and nearly 6,000 hours of advocacy.

“This fundraiser helps support our day-to-day operations while brightening up what can be a dreary month with a touch of community,” said Alternative House Executive Director Maria Crooker-Capone. “The services that Alternative House provides to survivors of domestic violence are sometimes lifesaving, and in almost all cases they are life-changing. Domestic violence affects people across all genders, races and ages — and doesn’t just happen 9-5. We rely on fundraisers and supporters like the Ladies of Long Meadow to do what we do.”
