Letter to the Editor: Safe Streets Tewksbury

In the wake of the second fatal pedestrian crash this year and the third in three years, Safe Streets Tewksbury calls for pedestrian safety improvements on Main St (Rt 38) near Stadium Plaza.

Safe Streets Tewksbury is writing to urge immediate action to address the dangerous conditions along Main Street (Rt 38) from Stadium Plaza to the Pike/Astle St intersection as well as nearby Clark Rd. This busy retail and business district has now seen multiple fatal pedestrian crashes, including two this year and three within the past three years. These are not isolated incidents but signs of a systemic design problem that demands urgent attention.

This section of Main Street (Rt 38) carries heavy vehicle traffic but lacks adequate infrastructure to protect people walking to and from nearby homes, businesses and transit connections. Sidewalk gaps, missing and inadequate crosswalks, poor lighting, and vehicles traveling well above posted speed limits create constant risk for anyone on foot.

We call on MassDOT, the Town of Tewksbury, and state and local officials to act now by:

  • Conducting a comprehensive pedestrian-safety audit of Main Street from Stadium Plaza to Pike/Astle St and nearby streets including Clark Rd.
  • Implementing traffic-calming measures—such as median islands, narrower lanes, and lower speed limits—to slow traffic and improve visibility.
  • Installing continuous sidewalks, clearly marked crossings, and improved lighting.
  • Providing public updates on planned safety improvements and project timelines.

No one should risk their life simply walking to the store or the bus. We urge you to treat this as an urgent public safety concern and begin immediate coordination on short-term countermeasures and long-term redesign.
