Tewksbury’s Wamesit Lanes is hosting a Cornhole Tournament, supporting a local Merrimack Valley non-profit, on October 26th.
(Lawrence) – Merrimack Valley Dream Center, a Lawrence-based nonprofit, will hold a Cornhole Tournament at Wamesit Lanes, Tewksbury, on Sunday, October 26, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
The event will raise funds for the Dream Center’s work among some of the Merrimack Valley’s most needy individuals and families. Tickets are available now through the Center’s website, http://www.mvdreamcenter.org.
Merrimack Valley Dream Center is an all-volunteer organization founded in Lawrence in 2013. Its volunteers provide support to people experiencing homelessness and food insecure families at public housing projects in Lawrence and Methuen. Its Celebrate Recovery program supports those in recovery from any “hurt, hangup or habit” including anger, chemical dependency, control, codependency, depression, eating disorders, pornography, etc.
“People we serve are always in need of more healthy food. Our Mobile Food Pantry distributes tons of free groceries in Lawrence and Methuen every year to eligible individuals and families,” said Julio Meran, Merrimack Valley Dream Center’s Founder and Executive Director. But the need has steadily increased along with food price inflation over the past few years, he added.
Meran says there are too many unhoused people in local communities, and some experts predict it will increase as Federal safety net benefits are being curtailed. For those experiencing homelessness in Lawrence and Haverhill, the Dream Center operates two Fresh Start Shower & Laundry Services, one in each city. People with no regular access to showers or laundry machines can get a hot shower, personal hygiene items, new underwear or a complete set of clothes if needed, use of laundry machines, and get a meal or snack at the Fresh Start Services. They operate from customized trailer units.
Operating costs for both the Mobile Food Pantry and the Fresh Start Services have increased in the past year. Purchasing tickets for the Cornhole Tournament or a donation of any amount will help sustain these services that are so critical to those who need them, says Meran.
“The cornhole tournament will be an afternoon of fun, food, friendly competition, and giving back—to support essential programs for individuals experiencing homelessness and food insecurity,” Meran says.
Individual tickets are $25, or for a team of four, $85. For further information or to purchase tickets: https://www.mvdreamcenter.org/mvdc-cornhole-fundraisertournament.html
