Residents of Tewksbury are hosting a demonstration this Saturday (5/24) in opposition to the proposed lithium-ion battery farm in town.
An energy company wants to plant a “farm” of more than 15 million pounds of lithium-ion batteries in a Tewksbury neighborhood. Most town residents are unaware of this plan. That’s why those who do understand the danger are staging public demonstrations.
The next demonstration will be staged this Saturday, May 24, near the intersection of Main and Shawsheen streets (in the area of Donna’s Donuts) from 9:30 until 2:30. Participants will provide petitions for townspeople to sign in opposition to the plan.
Similar Battery Storage Energy Systems (BESS) elsewhere have caught fire, sometimes burning for days because lithium-ion battery fires defy standard firefighting methods. The resulting smoke and toxic fumes cause havoc – and often require mass evacuations in surrounding areas.
