In 1734, Samuel Hunt II and 41 settlers made a second attempt to separate from Billerica, petitioned the State, received approval, built a meeting house in the new Town Center and formed a separate Town, named Tewksbury.
It is with that steadfast dedication that Tewksbury residents formed a community based on faith, family, patriotism, farming and small industry. Pride and support for our country and wars here and abroad are evident throughout our history. In 1934, the Town’s 200th Anniversary, citizens celebrated their history and growth with class and dignity.
Rev. Douglas Sears J.D. and Nancy Reed are 35+ year residents of Tewksbury. Having served on various Town elected and appointed boards, their knowledge is diverse. With Douglas serving as President
and Nancy as Vice-President of the Tewksbury Historical Society, their insight is towards times past. The images in this book are from the Tewksbury Historical Society’s collection and others as noted.

Beginning as an agricultural community, along with fishing in the Merrimack, Shawsheen, and Concord Rivers, industries such as dairies, tanneries, furniture making, sawmills, blacksmith shops, and even a soap factory prospered during the 1800s. Greenhouses began to spring up in the late 1800s. In the 1970s, Tewksbury was deemed the Carnation Capital of the World for its production and cultivation talents. In 1934, at the town’s 200th Anniversary Celebration, citizens celebrated its beginnings and growth with pride and patriotism. Today, public art includes figures from Tewksbury’s past by renowned resident sculptor Mico Kaufman.
