Tewksbury Youth Lacrosse Homecoming Weekend a Success

Results are in for TYL’s first Fastest Shot Competition, held at Livingston St. on Sunday in conjunction with homecoming and team photography.

“We had over 100 contestants of all ages, current players and non, with many making multiple attempts to beat their personal best,” said organizer Laurie Warden. There was a tie within girls U11 and U13 categories, but all contestants did a great job.

Lacrosse is exploding in popularity in town, said TYL Board President George Phillips. Currently 185 boys and girls from kindergarten through Grade 8 participate. There is no inter-town play; all teams are travel, with Tewksbury taking on towns at home and in about a 30 – 45-minute radius, from Winthrop to Amesbury. Games are on Sundays and typically last 1 hour to 90 minutes.

One appeal is the speed of the game.

“With lacrosse they’re constantly running,” said Phillips. “It’s pretty much hockey on grass. So it’s very fast, aggressive, they can hit, they can check.”

Warden said the league is working hard to grow the youth lacrosse program in town, and momentum is picking up. Anyone interested in learning more can check out the league’s website.
