Snippets from the Council on Aging Meeting

New grant dollars mean new programs for 2024

Seeing a quorum present, Vice-Chairperson Ginny Desmond called the meeting to order at 3 p.m.

The council then unanimously approved the minutes of Nov. 21, 2023.

The calendar for January 2024 was presented and discussed:

There are 2 Monday holidays in January that the center will be closed, New Years Day and Martin Luther King Day. There will be a Rainbow Social on Friday Jan. 4. The Silvertones Dance is on Friday the 19th, and of course the popular DJ Dance/Lunch is on Monday the 29th. Additionally, the Men’s Group meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at 9 a.m., and the Wellness Workshops are the 2nd and 4th Mondays at 10 a.m.

Be sure to check out what’s showing at the Friday movies at 10 a.m.

Director Jan Conole’s report highlighted many ongoing and new events happening at the center. Tewksbury was awarded the state Hybrid Grant for $99,819. This grant will allow for some programs to be held virtually or in person. There will be a Brains and Balance class, cognitive behavioral therapy and technology classes. Watch for these and other classes to start sometime in January and run through March 2024.

The Mass Council on Aging awarded Tewksbury two grants. One is for the expansion of the GARDEN out back — you will see more new raised beds for the very productive vegetable gardens grown by the seniors. The other is for financial assistance for caregiver respite. You should reach out to Susan Timmons or Christina Hess ( 978-640-4480 x 290 ) for assistance and details on eligibility and how to apply for this service.

Craft classes will be starting up on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 10 a.m. The first project will be a Valentine Heart Wreath, $20 includes all necessary supplies.

The first Winter Farmer’s Markets is at the Senior Center on Thursday Dec. 28 from 4-7 p.m. There will be 30 vendors and two food trucks. Mark your 2024 calendars for January 25 and February 29 (LEAP YEAR).

The next COA meeting is on January 16, 2024, at 3 p.m.

“Why not start the New Year off with a visit to the Senior Center. There’s lots to see and do at the center, and you just might find an old friend or make some new ones. Check out the UPSCALE BOUTIQUE or the GIFT SHOP on CHANDLER, have your blood pressure checked, drop in to play cribbage or whist. Did you know there is a Veteran’s Coffee Social every Tuesday morning at 10am. Hope to see you there in 2024!”
