Tewksbury 5 Red 24 – Bedford, NH 22
Tewksbury’s 5th grade travel team, 5 Red, sits at 4-0 in the River Valley League. The team recently outlasted a tough Bedford, NH team 24-22 at the Ryan School. Sydney Schofield was awarded Player of the Game to commemorate her first career 3-pointer; the speedy guard celebrated the occasion by sinking another three on the following possession. Sofia Lyons led all scorers with 8 gritty points off of another fantastic rebounding performance. Shaun Stevenson and Addison Obie took care of business at the free throw line with Stevenson going 2 for 2 and Obie 1 for 2. Allison Fedoce dropped in a basket and hustled on defense. Sawyer Giampa was a steady force for Tewksbury, playing exceptional defense against Bedford’s top player and netting a big basket in the 2nd half. Jocelyn Slattery had outstanding defensive play as well–alternating with Giampa defensively and delivering assists to the team’s post players. Tewksbury 5 Red 37 – Tyngsboro 20
5 Red squared off against a Tyngsboro team that had ended their playoff hopes 9 months ago when they beat Tewksbury by 1 point in last year’s postseason tournament. This time, Tewksbury emerged victorious, winning by 17 points. Leading the scoring attack for Tewksbury was Sydney Schofield (10 pts) and Allison Fedoce (8 pts), the two guards also made big plays defensively. The hard working Karina Sheehan dropped in 4 points and continued to make her presence known grabbing rebounds. Natalie Condon was named player of the game for her tough defense, aggressive rebounding and 4 points in the 4th quarter. Bria Laidlaw made hustle plays all over the court and kept Tyngsboro on their toes. Shaun Stevenson opened the game making a nice jump shot in the first quarter and went 1 for 2 from the free throw line. Jocelyn Slattery played great defensively and dropped in a timely bucket in the first quarter to give Tewksbury the lead. Tewksbury 5 Red 23 – Burlington 15
Tewksbury kept rolling on Sunday, netting a win vs a scrappy Burlington team at the Ryan School. Sharp shooting guard Sawyer Giampa led all scorers with 8 points, pulled down 7 rebounds and came up big on the defensive end with a handful of steals. Sofia Lyons was tasked with defending Burlington’s tall center and showed her mental toughness grabbing 13 rebounds and staying focused putting the ball back up against aggressive defenders. She earned 8 trips to the free throw line as a result. Bria Laidlaw was awarded Player of the Game for her continued hustle and excellent decision-making running the fast break, she scored 4 points for Tewksbury. Sydney Schofield netted 4 points and did a great job finding open teammates. Shaun Stevenson scored a timely fourth quarter bucket to fend off a late game run by Burlington.
Wakefield 30 – Tewksbury 4 Blue 26
Wakefield came to Tewksbury on Sunday both undefeated and untested, sporting multiple double digit victories on their early season schedule. They certainly got a test from the Tewksbury Blue squad, who ultimately fell just short of a victory.
Birthday girl Addy Wagstaff, paced the scoring with a game high 14 points in addition to drawing some tough defensive assignments. Mila Kasprzak battled her way to 4 points and Kristina Ruscio chipped in a hoop as well. Ollie Ginsburg was ferocious throughout the game and scored 6 of her own points in addition to being Tewksbury’s leading rebounder.
Tewksbury had the task of containing several potent offensive players for Wakefield and Avery Conley and Charlotte Taylor were well up to the task. Aisling Sheehan was aggressive as always and was valuable for her ball handling skills. Although Tewksbury faced a bit of a size disadvantage, it didn’t deter both Maeve Rosso and Tenley Torra from battling all game.
Dec. 16 at Burlington
Tewksbury 7 Red dropped a close and hard-fought game to Burlington by a score of 38-33. The team entered the game shorthanded, starting with only 7 girls available to play. They gave 110% pushing through the long minutes they all had to endure and showed out with a combined 32 rebounds in the game!
Leading the team in scoring was Kaelyn Obie with 12pts, 3 boards, 3 assists, and 2 steals, followed by Brooke Dykeman who posted an 11pt, 4 rebound, 3 steal stat line. Mia Davis and Vera Garabedian each contributed 4 pts and had a great night rebounding with 12 and 6 rebounds respectively. Kathryn Pejic rounded out the scoring with 2pts along with 5 rebounds while Addison Perkins, Kaleigh McDonough, and Sofia Rosetti added some great defense with 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals (Perkins) and a blocked shot (McDonough). Although the team fell short of a win, the team came out of the game proud of how they competed and feel confident the outcome could have been different with a full squad!
Dec. 17 at Woburn
With their second away game of the weekend, and still down 2 players, Tewksbury 7 Red found themselves in another close and hard-fought game against Woburn, this time coming up just short by a score of 31-28. Mia Davis lead the team in scoring (10pts) and rebounds (7) with Kaelyn Obie and Vera Garabedian adding 6 points each to go along with 1 rebound (Obie) and 2 rebounds with 5 steals (Garabedian). Kathryn Pejic and Brooke Dykeman rounded out the scoring with a stat line of 5 pts and 5 rebounds (Pejic) and 1pt and 6 rebounds (Dykeman). Kaleigh McDonough added another block to her weekend with Addison Perkins continuing her aggressive defensive performance with 2 rebounds and 3 steals, and Sofia Rosetti doing it on both ends of the court with 1 assist and 1 steal. Even though the team dropped two tightly contested games this weekend against two solid teams, they continue to feel confident about the direction of their play and are excited to build off of these games.
Tewksbury 4 Red beat Burlington 4 Red Sunday evening behind a strong performance by Victoria McIsaac. McIsaac led all scorers with 22 points while also puling down countless rebounds. Joining McIssac on the scoresheet was Kassidy Hyslop with 10 points as well as Charlotte McAvoy and Paige Hamilton who each chipped in with two points apiece.
Tewksbury 4 Red will be in back in action again on January 6 when they take on Stoneham.
