Tewksbury’s Paige Rattey Earns Silver With Crystal Blades Team

Reading-based troupe traveled to Michigan for competition

More than 75 of the country’s top Theatre on Ice teams headed to Fraser, Michigan the last week of June for the 2023 National Theatre on Ice. Nearly 1,300 skaters competed across the four-day event at Big Boy Arena, competing for titles in eight divisions: preliminary, intermediate, novice, junior, senior, open, adult and adaptive.

The North Shore Skating Club Crystal Blades Theatre on Ice team won a silver medal at the competition on June 28. Placing third after the choreographic exercise, the team rose to second after their free skate to become the 2023 US Theatre on Ice Open Division Silver Medalists.

The team is coached by Kate McSwain and Faye Greel and is based out of Reading’s Burbank Ice Arena.

Theatre On Ice (TOI) is a form of competitive figure skating that combines the grace of figure skating with the excitement of theatre and dance. Known as “Ballet on Ice” in Europe, Theatre on Ice teams consist of eight to 30 skaters on the ice telling a story together. TOI brings skaters together and gives athletes the chance to be a part of a team, travel locally and internationally, and make new friends.

Competition consists of two programs: a free skate and choreographic exercise. Teams are evaluated on technical elements as well as presentation with a specific emphasis on originality, costuming, artistry and musicality. Learn more.

Congratulations to Paige Rattey and other local skaters on their medal!
