7 Takeaways from the Council on Aging Meeting

New hours for the Senior Center start Monday, June 26

The Tewksbury Council on Aging held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 20. The COA is closing in on the fiscal year end, and budgets are in very good shape. On July 1, the new fiscal year will start with brand new appropriations as voted by Town Meeting this past May.

The Select Board and COA made their appointments to the council recently. Welcome back Donna Bell, Kathleen Walsh, Arlene Wright and Tracy Skahan. Nominations were made and seconded for the officers for the new year: Lynn Murphy, Chair; Ginny Desmond, Vice-chair; Arthur Costa, Treasurer; Tracy Skahan, Secretary. Congratulations to all.

Updates from Director Jan Conole:

There will be a SCAM PRESENTATION on June 22, sponsored by Eastern Bank. There will be more educational type workshops like this in the future. Behavioral Health workshops have ended, but there is a strong interest in doing more as they were very well attended.

AgeSpan will have a booth at the Community Market again this summer. Fresh vegetables from a farm in Haverhill will be made available to elder residents. This is an income-based program, and you should contact outreach worker Christina Hess for details. You can also get information on the Mobile Market, formerly known as the Brown Bag program, from Hess.

The Town of Tewksbury is piloting a new schedule for operating municipal offices at the Town Hall, the Town Hall Annex and the Senior Center starting Monday, June 26.

The new hours will be as follows:
Monday 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Tuesday 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Wednesday 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Thursday 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Friday 7:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Because of this change, the Friday movies with TPL will now be shown at 10 a.m. Friday mornings. Country line dance class has a new instructor for July and August, and these classes will start at 11:30 a.m. instead of 11 a.m.

LGBTQ+ socials have been moved to the first Thursday of each month.

The next intake for the Boutique Shoppe will be on the second Monday in July, so as not interfere with the July 4th holiday.

Don’t forget about the monthly DJ dances! The next one is Monday, June 26. The Friends of the Elderly are sponsoring, for the first time, a trip to the ENCORE CASINO on July 12. Tickets for the bus are available at the front desk.

Please check out this month’s COA newsletter for more information on the many happenings at the Center.
