Takeaways from the Council on Aging Meeting

Town Meeting transfered monies into the Repairs & Maintenance account

The monthly meeting of the Tewksbury Council on Aging was held on Monday, May 16 at the Senior Center.

Director Jan Conole submitted her report about Center happenings. Town Meeting transferred $12,000 into the Repairs & Maintenance account to help with expenses incurred when repairing the boiler over the past winter. Additional money was also needed to make up for a potential shortfall in the utility account.

Be on the lookout for several interesting workshops next month. On June 8 at 10 a.m., Atty. Catherine Geary, of Geary and Geary of Lowell, will be here to discuss Estate Planning and how to get ready, at any age, for whatever life may bring.

Also in June, Jan is working on getting some local banks to come and talk to us about those darn phone scams and how to prevent you from being a victim. We will let you know when those dates are finalized.

June 7 and 21 will be the last of our FREE workshops, Mindfulness & Relaxation and Awakening to Joy. These workshops were funded by a grant and hopefully, we will be able to take advantage of another grant next year, so that we may continue to provide these much-needed mental health workshops.

The GAC is planning a BBQ lunch sometime in August. We’ll keep you posted.

The Silvertones dance is coming up on this Friday, May 17. Purchase tickets at the door for $10 per person. Soda and bottled water will be available for purchase. The DJ lunch dance is scheduled for Monday, May 22 — early sign up is recommended for this popular monthly event. Tickets are $8 per person and include lunch provided by AgeSpan’s Traveling Chef.

The Punch Card system for the exercise classes has been a very successful alternative to paying by the day or month. An extra shout out to Tammy for taking on the task to make sure the cards are being punched.

Don’t forget to check out the casino day trips. Encore has been added to the schedule this year, along with Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.

The next COA meeting is on June 20, at which time board member re-appointments will be discussed. There will be two appointments made by the Select Board and two made by the COA Board. Nominating and electing the officers for the upcoming year starting July 1 will also happen at this meeting.
