What To Know in Tewksbury the Week of August 28

Kids go back to school on Wednesday and Thursday, so be careful when driving. Parents who need supply lists, bus routes or any other info can check out our Back to School guide. 

There are no official board or committee meetings this week, but there are two community concerts to choose from, on Monday and Wednesday. And early voting hours are all week from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Town Hall. 

Monday, August 29

DJ Dance and Traveling Chef Lunch
When: 11:40 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Where: Senior Center, $8 per person

Shawsheen Tech Swimming Class Signup
When: Monday – Wed., 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Where: Shawsheen Tech

Shawsheen Tech will hold registration for the Fall Learn to Swim Program on Monday, August 29; Tuesday, August 30; and Wednesday, August 31 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the school’s pool hallway. Lessons run from Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022 to Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022, with no classes on Columbus Day weekend. Class times are staggered between 9 and 11 a.m.

EIGHT 30-minute lessons for beginning swimmers cost $125. (Early-bird pricing with cash or check will be $105.) EIGHT 60-minute lessons for more advanced swimmers cost $250.

Peach Festival at Billerica Farmers Market
When: 2:30 – 7 p.m.
Where: 25 Concord Rd., Billerica

Join us in celebrating the bounty of the peach crop in New England. Vendors will have various peach-themed specials.

Town manager John Curran will read a story to children under the big tent. Entertainment and much more.

Outdoor Concert Series: The Broken Heels — Pop & Rock Hits For Boomers, Gen X, Millennials & Gen Z
When: 6 – 7:30 p.m.
Where: Library back lawn

Enjoy a concert from The Broken Heels, a Boston-based cover band specializing in modern hits and 60’s to 90’s rock. The band covers current acts like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Olivia Rodrigo, and Adele, as well as favorites from Gen X and Gen Y childhoods.  And they certainly won’t ignore the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, with Bruce Springsteen, Queen, Bon Jovi, Fleetwood Mac and more on the playlist. Be prepared to dance the night away! 

Come early to claim your spot and, from 5 to 6 p.m., purchase a raffle ticket ($1 or 6 for $5) to win $25 in scratch tickets. Drawing is right before the show starts. Benefits the Friends of the Tewksbury Library.

Tai Chi @ the Senior Center

Join the Senior Center for Tai Chi every Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. At 10 a.m. there will be a free blood pressure clinic. Then, at 12:45, it’s Zingo time.

In Person: Nazis of Copley Square — The Forgotten Story of the Christian Front

On January 13, 1940, FBI agents burst into the homes and offices of seventeen members of the Christian Front, seizing guns, ammunition and homemade bombs. J. Edgar Hoover’s charges were incendiary: The group, he alleged, was planning to incite a revolution and install a “temporary dictatorship” in order to stamp out Jewish and Communist influence in the United States. In Nazis of Copley Square, author Charles Gallagher provides a crucial missing chapter in the history of the American far right.

Outdoor Concert Series: Crush — A Dave Matthews Tribute

RESCHEDULED: Come enjoy a concert from Brett Huntley and Matt Salito of Crush, New England’s premier Dave Matthews Tribute Band. Drawing heavily from the Dave Matthews Band’s “Big 3” albums  Under the Table and Dreaming, Crash and Before These Crowded Streets, “Crush” brings the classic 90’s sound of Dave Matthews while including several of their hits from post-2000. Brett and Matt recreate the softs and highs of the acoustic sound of Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds. VIRTUAL: Explore The National Park Service Units in Massachusetts

Contrary to some signs you may see along state roads, there are no National Parks in Massachusetts. There are, however, 16 different locations in the state that are under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service – they represent a variety of “unit designations” ranging from historical sites to recreation areas to a National Seashore. Our guide Steve Farrar will take us on a tour of local places that can give us a taste of the National Park Service right here in our own backyard (or at least within distance of a day trip).
