TMHS Production of ‘Mamma Mia’ Nominated for 7 TAMY Awards

By Jeannette Waugh

The TMHS Theater Company production of Mamma Mia has received recognition for its acting, singing and technical excellence. Creative director Celeste Pellegrino and stage manager David Moffat led more than 60 TMHS students both onstage and backstage in a stellar April performance of the musical, which is based on the songs of ABBA and set on the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi.

Every year, the Theatre at the Mount/Mount Wachusett Community College presents The High School Musical Theatre Awards. Now in their sixteenth year, the TAMYS recognize exceptional accomplishments in the production and performance of musical theatre in area high schools. This spring’s TMHS musical is one of 19 high school musical productions entered in the TAMYS this year and the proud recipient of seven nominations!

The 2022 TAMYS awards ceremony honoring the winners will be held on Sunday, June 12, in Gardner, Mass. In attendance at the “red carpet” ceremony modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards will be many members of the Mamma Mia cast and crew.

Theatre at the Mount staff attends and evaluates each production entered and presents the nominations in each category. The large- and small-school winners of the Best Overall Production receives a full two-year scholarship to Mount Wachusett Community College for a student enrolling in the Liberal Studies/Theatre Program.

The categories TMHSTC’s Mamma Mia has been recognized for are:
BEST OVERALL PRODUCTION (Large School Division)
BEST ACTRESS – Vanessa Waugh (Donna)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS – Bella Dematos (Tanya)
BEST DANCE ENSEMBLE (Large School Division)
BEST PRODUCTION NUMBER (Large School Division) – Mega-Mix Finale – Mamma Mia
TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE – SOUND (Large School Division)
NOT-YOUR-AVERAGE CHORUS MEMBER – Emma Pelland

TMHS seniors Stephen O’Hearn, Gabriella Navarrete and Vanessa Waugh have been invited to perform on stage at the awards ceremony, and dozens of students from the TMHS Theater Company will be attending the grand ceremony in to cheer on Tewksbury.

Will TMHS Theater Company take home a few of these TAMYS?
