This Week in Tewksbury: Select Board, School Committee Meet

Remember that the library will be closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for carpet installation. There are still virtual events, and in-person programming resumes on Thursday. Check out the calendar for a full list.

In honor of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, the Senior Center invites all Tewksbury residents to drop in between 10 a.m. and noon on June 7 to purchase and personalize a flower to be added to the Promise Garden. The cost is $7, and all proceeds go to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Looking ahead, BostonARMY, the local chapter of Kpop group BTS’ official global fan club, will hold a free Festa Fair on June 11 at the Tewksbury Masonic Lodge on Victor Ave. Expect fans from all over New England to gather for a day of shopping, food, music and fun. See more info below.

Monday, June 6

Job Seeker Help: Are You Being Screened Out? Dealing With The ATS

How do you know if an automated applicant tracking system (ATS) is screening you out? What can you do about it? In this presentation we’ll explore the intent behind an employer’s ATS, whether you as an applicant are setting yourself up for a “black hole” experience, what you do about it if so and alternate strategies when you’re a fit for the job. Led by Tom McDonough, director of programs and founding Board member for the Institute for Career Transitions.

Elder Law Presentation: Being Prepared for What Life May Bring

Elder law attorney Elizabeth Ahern will present on multiple areas, including essential documents for an estate plan, trusts and how to avoid probate. Free.

Select Board
When: 7 p.m.

The Select Board will enjoy a presentation by the TMHS Robotics Team before addressing town committee assignments and announcing some groups that will disband. It will also discuss liquor license violations stemming from the recent TPD underage alcohol compliance checks that found violations at four local establishments. AGENDA

Wednesday, June 8

Field Trip to Catie’s Closet
When: 4 – 8 p.m.
Where: 19 School St., Dracut

Have you ever wondered how this group — which recently presented to Tewksbury’s 100 People Who Care group — meets the needs of more than 75,000 students each day? Wednesday marks the organization’s biggest fundraiser of the year, where attendees get an exclusive peek behind the door of Catie’s Closet’s Dracut Distribution Center. Tickets are $75 and include heavy hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and complimentary champagne, wine and beer. Space is limited to 200 guests, and tickets are now available.

Tewksbury School Committee
When: 6 p.m.

The School Committee will enter executive session at 6 p.m. then reconvene at 6:30 to address a packed agenda. After recognizing retiring staff members and volunteers, the committee will hear from subcommittee designees and consider policy updates. New business includes student travel, summer reading and a vote on a contract for the new superintendent. AGENDA

Seminar: How to Pay for Long-Term Care
When: 6 p.m.
Where: 500 West Cummings Park, Suite 2350, Woburn

Estate planning and elder law specialists attorney Michael Monteforte and attorney Jacob Snyder will present a free seminar on ways to save thousands of dollars on long-term care costs by planning ahead. Those interested can register here.

Conservation Commission

The Conservation Commission will address violation notices for 2493 Main St., the former Route 38 Café, and the DPW as well as an enforcement order against the town at Saunders Recreation area on Livingston St.

Thursday, June 9

Elementary School Building Committee
When: 6 p.m.
Where: Town Hall, in-person only

After updates on progress of the new school, the ESBC will discuss the moving process. One big ticket item: Approval of a $2,261,214 invoice for Consigli Construction.

Tewksbury Open Space & Recreation Plan Committee
When:
6 p.m.
Where: Town Hall, in-person only

The resident committee working on open space and recreation for residents will meet. The agenda includes the Marston St. parcel being offered to the town and a pollinator garden.

Tewksbury North St. & Trahan Reuse Committee
When:
7 p.m.
Where: Town Hall, in-person only

Rescheduled from last week. The resident committee considering recommendations for the Trahan and North St. properties will meet.

In-Person Concert: The Songs and Stories of the Highwaymen with Matt York
When: 7 p.m.
Where: Billerica Public Library

In person at the library, longtime New England singer/songwriter Matt York will perform the songs of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings and tell stories of their careers. The four songwriting legends joined forces in the 1980s to form the country supergroup, the Highwaymen. However, prior to that, they’d each established themselves as stars, and their careers intersected many times since the 1960s. York has twice been nominated as Best Male Artist by the New England Music Awards and his latest release was named one of the Boston Globe’s best albums of 2019.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Billerica Local Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency. Space is limited, so register soon.

Friday, June 10

Screening: Uncharted

Enjoy a screening of one of Hollywood’s latest films, Uncharted. Street-smart Nathan Drake is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan, and lost 500 years ago by the House of Moncada. An action adventure starring Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg and Antonio Banderas. 

Doors will open 15 minutes ahead of the show start time. Candy & water will be served. A $1 donation is suggested. Sponsored by the Friends of the Tewksbury Library and Tewksbury Lions Club.

Parents can mark their calendars for the annual Bike Rodeo to help kids learn about safety. By registering in advance, you’ll get reminders.

Lorna is a U.S. Army veteran and 25-year resident of Tewksbury who has written for organizations ranging from the DIA to InformationWeek to a free weekly in New London that sent her to interview the pastry chef at Foxwoods.
