What To Know In Tewksbury the Week of Feb. 6

There’s a lot going on this week — much of it virtual and available online. Of note, the School Committee will provide a public budget review on Wed., and the Open Space and Recreation Committee will convene to talk guided trail hikes.

There are also plenty of programs at the Library, from delicious ways to cook with berries to a culinary tour of the UK inspired by “The Great British Baking Show.” Check out the full TPL schedule here.

Raising The Dead: Find Clues To Ancestors From Headstones, Plots & Burial Records Roundtable

Cemetery records can offer important clues to understanding the lives of those who came before us. Join NEHGS Chief Genealogist David Allen Lambert, of author of A Guide to Massachusetts Cemeteries (now in its third edition), to learn how headstones, family plots, and burial documents can shed new light on your ancestor’s life. Lambert is an internationally recognized speaker on the topics of genealogy and history, and has published many articles. He is an elected Fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society and the tribal genealogist for the Massachuset-Punkapoag Indians of Massachusetts. This virtual event is a collaboration between the libraries of Andover, Billerica, Chelmsford, North Reading, Tewksbury and Wilmington.

Tewksbury Beautification Committee
When: Monday, Feb. 7, 6:30 p.m.

The Beautification Committee is looking for a local artist to take part in its Switchbox Art Project. This project promotes public art in our community while celebrating the past, present and future of Tewksbury. More details will be available at the meeting. AGENDA

Finance Committee

Library Trustees

Chainsaws, Cheeseburgers and Rock & Roll (Teen and Adult)

Jacqueline Kennedy: Cooking with the First Ladies

Join Sarah Morgan and her “Cooking with the First Ladies” project while we make a few of Jackie Kennedy’s favorite dishes and cocktails. During the live virtual program, Sarah will discuss First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and 1960s counterculture as well as Jackie O’s favorite recipes: Green Risotto, a classic Boston Cream Pie, and two cocktails, The “Clint” and a Femme Fatale! Also, learn a few other Jackie recipes, including how she liked her baked potatoes and how to make a crudité plate! Registered participants will receive copies of the recipes prior to the virtual program.

School Committee
When: Wednesday, Feb. 9, 5 – 8:00 p.m.

There’s lots going on this week for the School Committee. It will convent at 5 p.m. then immediately enter executive session to discuss matters including ongoing contract mediation with the Tewksbury Teachers Association. At 6 p.m., there will be a public hearing on the School Department budget, followed by the group’s regular meeting, which will include an update on the search for a new TMHS principal. AGENDA

Elementary School Building Committee
When: Thursday, Feb. 10, 6 p.m.

The new Center Elementary School is coming along — residents can see a live construction cam at the project’s website. AGENDA

Open Space and Recreation Plan Committee

The Tewksbury Democratic Town Committee requests that residents who wish to attend Saturday’s Caucus virtually sign up by noon so the the clerk has time to check registration status and get information out before the hybrid event convenes on Saturday morning.

The Tewksbury Republican Town Committee has its caucus information on its Facebook page, along with more information on upcoming TRTC events.

Film Screening: My Salinger Year
When:
Friday, Feb. 11, doors open at 1:15 p.m.
Where: Senior Center Library. Registration required

Enjoy a screening of My Salinger Year, a drama starring Margaret Qualley and Sigourney Weaver. A college grad takes a clerical job working for the literary agent of the renowned, reclusive writer J.D. Salinger. Based on the book My Salinger Year by Joanna Smith Rakoff. R. 101 minutes.

Registration required. Limited to 20 seats. No candy & water will be served for the time being. Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Tewksbury Public Library and Tewksbury Lions Club.

Heroes & Villains: DC vs. Marvel Trivia Night
When: Friday, Feb. 11, 7 – 8:30 p.m.

Join us on Zoom to test your knowledge of superheroes & supervillains from Marvel, DC and beyond! (And not all heroes & villains necessarily have “super powers.” See: Batman.) Play solo or organize a team! For security purposes, participants’ videos will be disabled, so no need to worry about having a working webcam to play. The ability to view slides on a screen is all you need for this fantastic trivia fun! Please note that trivia questions are geared towards adults in challenge rating. (If families want to play together, however, there are no “embarrassing” questions or content.)

Finally, we mistakenly listed the Open Space Gift Shop Valentine’s craft fair as happening last weekend. It’s actually this Saturday!

Mini Valentine’s Craft Fair

Join us for a Mini Valentine’s Craft Fair and do some shopping of various unique and handmade items! Our gift shop has over 50 makers in store and hundreds of items! We’ll have 7 local makers popping up with tables full of handmade items.

Lorna is a U.S. Army veteran and 25-year resident of Tewksbury who has written for organizations ranging from the DIA to InformationWeek to a free weekly in New London that sent her to interview the pastry chef at Foxwoods.
