State Delegation Announces Fire Safety Equipment Grant for TFD

State Senator Barry Finegold and the state legislative delegation announced today that the Tewksbury Fire Department will receive a grant award for fire safety gear allocated by the Baker-Polito Administration. $5 million in safety equipment grant funds were allocated to 306 municipal fire departments statewide.

TFD will receive $15,979.99 for safety equipment. Funds will cover expenses related to equipment that makes firefighting safer, such as rescue equipment and personal protective clothing.

“Time and time again our brave firefighters put their lives on the line to serve and protect our residents. I am grateful for the Baker-Polito Administration’s commitment to ensuring firefighters have the tools necessary to stay safe and healthy,” said State Senator Barry Finegold (D-Andover).

“I’m grateful to Chief Kearns and his team for pursuing a fire safety grant, and I’m thrilled that the state Department of Fire Services awarded the funding that will provide important safety equipment to Tewksbury’s firefighters,” said State Representative Tram Nguyen (D-Andover).

“This additional funding from the grant equipment is a great supplement to the funding that Senator Finegold, Representative Nguyen, and I secured earlier in the year for our first responders,” added State Representative David Robertson (D-Tewksbury). “Even before the pandemic our fire department was busier than ever before in the history of the town, and this grant helps provide the equipment these men and women need to be safe and exceptional, as they always are.”

The Firefighter Safety Equipment grant program, which municipal departments were invited to apply to, covers up to 118 different types of eligible equipment. The grant allows fire departments to attain compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration or National Fire Protection Association safety standards in addition to addressing the job-related health and safety risks for firefighters.
