Silvertones Celebrate 20 Year Anniversary, Will Perform On Dec. 17

By Cathy MacPherson

Tewksbury’s own Silvertones started 20 years ago as an idea. My father, the late Tom MacPherson, founder of the Silvertones, sat at his kitchen table talking about getting a big band together for the senior center. He was going to put up a sign, “Musicians Wanted” and go from there. He was confident people would dust off their instruments and join in. He talked about a name for this big band and over the course of about a half an hour, with several iterations and some crazy ideas, the Silvertones was declared the perfect name for the band.

The signs went up and the people came, slowly at first but with enthusiasm and instruments in hand, and so it began. My father would be so happy to see this group still thriving.

Now, 20 years and more than 200 performances later, the Silvertones continue to bring musical enjoyment to the community. We have had many wonderful musicians with us over the years. Sadly, we lost our beloved drummer, Jim Sutton, this past year. We are fortunate to have Ken Gross returning as our Musical Director along with our many talented musicians, some of whom have been with us for many years.

Whether you are a dancer or a big band enthusiast, you will enjoy the sounds of the big band era, line dance and ballroom music, and vocals made famous by Harry James, Billie Holiday and Sinatra when you come hear us play.

Please come out and join us in our 20th season at the Tewksbury Senior Center on the third Friday of the month. Doors open at 6:30 with music beginning at 7:00. If you have any questions regarding the band, please reach out to me, Cathy MacPherson, Band Manager. I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have. We hope to see you at the December dance.
