Tewksbury 8 Red Outshines Methuen In Spectacular Showdown

Full team effort gets Red 8 on track to face Nashua Saturday at home, while 7 Red edges out Wilmington

The Girls 8th Grade Travel Team had their work cut out for them going into Sunday’s game against Methuen.  Tewksbury has been fighting hard all season against very competitive Division 1 Teams but coming up short since their season opener victory against Salem, NH.  The mindset going into this game was to fix the little things, play 32 minutes while improving on what they have been doing well all season.

This game opened up with all defense from both sides with Methuen getting on the board first.  Tewksbury’s first basket came from Addie Hyslop to get 8 Red on the scoreboard and moving the team in the right direction.  Both teams had been playing lock down defense the entire first half, with Center Lila Chambers aggressively hitting the boards and pulling down a ton of rebounds for the team all game. Guard’s Kylie Dineen and Jenna Cole working over time to try and break through the solid defense of Methuen to find a way to the hoop.  With 6 seconds left in the half on an inbound play to Point Guard Reagan Maniscalco, who knocked down 16 points of her own for the day, cracked Methuen’s press to sink a 3 Point shot as the buzzer went to tie up the game 12-12 at half and get the momentum in Tewksbury’s favor.

The second half was a different story with both teams coming out swinging.  Kayleigh Martin got the bench fired up by putting up a 3 pointer of her own in the third.  Mya Power’s with four points on the day had her best game of the season playing aggressive defense and fighting for the ball all game. Tewksbury has been asking a lot from their team this year to work hard each practice and bring that concept to each game week in and out.  Chloe Veator has been getting back into her groove, putting up points the last few games as well as her constant hustle on the court, which is all you can ask for from these young players.  New recruit this year Taya Torra, who’s been getting better with each week, put in 6 points for Red to help build the lead.

Each week is a different matchup talent wise and it’s difficult to know who will be healthy to play.  Tewksbury could taste the win with only 4 minutes left with Point Guard Sarah Marano putting in 6 points in the fourth quarter alone and a total for 10 on the day, helping seal the win 45-36 over Methuen.  This win was an overall Team Effort and well needed to get these girls back on the right track.  Both coaches couldn’t be prouder of the team for how tough they fought to get this win.  Tewksbury’s 8 Red will verse Nashua this Saturday in another great matchup at Home.

Lowell – Tewksbury 7 Red fell to a strong Lowell squad by a final score of 48-33 after being up by 3 at halftime.

Brooke Dykeman lead the team with 12 pts and 15 rebounds, with Kaelyn Obie and Mia Davis both hitting a three pointer each, adding 8 and 5 points respectively.  Rounding out the scoring for the team was Vera Garabedian, with 4 pts, and Addy Anderson and Kathryn Pejic each adding 2.  Sofia Rossetti was a force on defense, causing Lowell to turn the ball over and a steal.

Turnovers were the key to this game, with Tewksbury committing 24 and Lowell capitalized on many of them.  The team will strive to bring those down as they continue into their season.

Andover – Although executing well defensively against a very disciplined Andover team, Tewksbury 7 Red found itself falling short by a final of 28-22.

Their intense defensive play coupled with excellent ball movement kept this game very close right to the end with Tewksbury outscoring Andover in the 4th quarter.

Leading the team in scoring was Kaelyn Obie (9 pts) who went 3 of 5 from behind the three-point line and added 3 rebounds.  Brooke Dykeman and Vera Garabedian followed with 5pts/7 rebounds and 4pts/11 rebounds respectively.  Kaleigh McDonough and Addison P. rounded out the scoring with 2 pts each.

Tewksbury out-rebounded Andover by nearly a 2:1 margin (27-14).  Defense was the name of this game, and while most of the team’s efforts don’t reflect on the stats sheet, this was a great team showing and something the girls can build on down the stretch.

Wilmington – Tewksbury 7 Red pulled out an impressive home win that came down to the last minute, against Wilmington by a final score of 38-36.

Brooke Dykeman lead the team with 16 pts and 10 boards, with Vera Garabedian adding 9pts and 5 rebounds.  Kathryn Pejic added 4 pts with Lanah Slattery, Mia Davis, and Kaelyn Obie all adding 3 of their own.  Addy Anderson and Addison Perkins provided 2 rebounds each.

The team’s confidence got a shot in the arm with this hard-fought win, and they’ll use that to build momentum moving forward.
