Tewksbury Junior Police Academy Scheduled, Registrations Open Now

The Tewksbury Police Department will offer the second annual Junior Police Academy for incoming fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders who are interested in learning more about law enforcement.

This year’s academy will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. from July 18-22 at Tewksbury Memorial High School, 320 Pleasant St.

The decision to offer the free program again this year was due to the success of last year’s program, which was attended by about 50 children.

Topics will include physical fitness and health and wellness classes, criminal law, investigations and cyber safety, CPR and first aid, drug and alcohol awareness, domestic violence, motor vehicle law, the K-9 Unit, the Drone Unit and mental health, with numerous hands-on activities to help students understand the content.

Applicants must be Tewksbury residents. Spots in the academy will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. If enough students express interest, a second academy class might be added from July 25-29. Residents wishing to reserve a spot in the academy should complete an application and waiver before April 25.

Academy uniforms, consisting of a tee shirt and hat, will be provided by the department and must be worn at all times during the academy. Each participant will be required to provide their own shorts,(navy blue or black) and athletic footwear (suitable for running) which will be worn throughout the academy program.
